Receiving numerous calls daily for the past two weeks. When answering the call, there is no reponse. From the previous comments, it seems that people have been receiving these harrassing phone calls for a few years now and I am wondering how come strict measures have not as yet been taken to put an end to this harrassment.

I'm also echoing everyone. Once I pick up the person on the other side of the line hangs up. Other numbers are (031) 816 2800, (031) 816 1600, (031) 816 5500. I don't just ignore these calls because I think by answering you give them authorization to your bank account - the R99 scam

I have received numerous calls from this and other similar numbers - all one after the other on a daily basis.
I have not picked up because it was clearly not a legitimate caller - no messages ever left and I am unable to call the number back as the call cuts off before I get dial tone.
Numbers are 816 6200 / 816 5400 / 816 6000 / 816 5800 / 816 5000 ...all Durban Codes.
Surely something can be done about this - how can this be legal??? -

Keep getting private calls on cell and then directly thereafter on landline from 031-8164600. Been happening for a couple of months now.Caller cuts the call when answered. Tried calling back, line is engaged or recording says number does not exist or theres a strange noise/network busy and the call disconnects.

Why oh why do we have to put up with nuisance calls but cannot do a reverse search to find out who is behind it?????
They don't speak to you, you can't phone them back and certainly not trace them. I registered on optout.com and have reduced nuisance calls by at least 90%. Try it, it's worth it as it is run by Direct Marketing Assoc.! -

Same story. Happens a few times daily. Just after the calls, I also receive calls from a number: 0830110200 and "no number" calls that does the same! This has been going on for a week now. If you look at "hello peter" the 0830110200 number is from a Mtn call centre. Could it be someone in a Durban call centre who has too much time?!...
Walls replied 11/9/12, 2:45 PMThat is it. The last call did actually come through. It was an Indian lady from MTN. I kindly asked her to stop calling my number and the calls have ceased. I have a sneaking suspicion this is an out of country connect/help centre call and their software is struggling with transferring the calls. I thought it was only going to be on my cell phone, but it started to be: call on cell, connection fail, directly after call on landline, connection fail which leads me to believe in own logic that it is not going down a 08* list of numbers, but actual contact details. -

I have this theory, that companies are selling our information. Then our information gets sent to a secondary (telemarketing?) company whose job is to test and store this data before selling this database back to companies. That's why these calls are generally at odd times and with the same starting numbers denoting one company; telemarketers don't usually work at odd times but they do have multiple lines. These secondary companies may be setting up software where the sole purpose is to call numbers at set times and check when they are picked up or not. Time of day picked up will denote to the system if that's a work number or private number.

I have been receiving these calls for more than a week, as unknown and also with no displayed 0318164600. When answering, no sound, just disconnects after a while. These calls happen throughout the day, late at night & even early morning, 2am. Twice I have called back, the first time it said, this subscriber is not available. Then also it said, this number does not exist. It is extremely irritating, but I press answer option and just let the person pay.

I have received a weekly call from this number for over a month now, usually on a Thursday or Friday. The line disconnects as soon as I answer, and when I call back my phone says "No circuit/channel available".
